History
The Monte Carlo Rally promised to be more exciting than ever in 1964. And what had become increasingly evident in the years before then became a clear fact on 17 January 1964. The era of the amateurs was coming to an end, with more and more works teams now entering the Monte. In terms of sheer numbers the works BMC team ran six nimble Minis, with 24 more Minis being raced by private teams.
Mini drivers Patrick Hopkirk and Henry Liddon set out on the Monte with a new and even more powerful car: the new Cooper S with a larger engine which displaced 1071 cc.
The ultra-powerful Ford Falcons, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE, Volvo 544, Volkswagen 1500 and Citroen DS 19 cars were no match for the Mini Cooper of Paddy Hopkirk finishing as the triumphant winner.

In recognition of possibly the greatest ever British crime caper, three of the stars from 1969’s cult classic, The Italian Job, are now faithfully reproduced by Scalextric.
An icon of design when the film was released, the three Mk1 Austin Mini Cooper S’s captured the hearts of movie fans the world over; starring in one of the most memorable car chase scenes in cinema history.
Incredibly, for the shooting of the getaway scenes the cars were only slightly modified to achieve the array of dazzling stunts. Movie cars are generally heavily modified to cope with the strains of stunt driving, but the Coopers were race bred, extremely light and incredibly tough in all the right areas.
The Mini originally went into production in 1959 and, coincidentally, celebrates its 50th anniversary as the classic The Italian Job movie celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2009.
The Italian Job remains as one of the most distinctive comedy films in the history of British cinema.
